Foods and Drinks in Slovenia

Ajdovi žganci
Ajdovi žganci is a national Slovenian dish. The word žganci is derived from the Slovenian verb žgati, what means: 'to burn, to toast'. The main ingredients are buckwheat flour, water, salt, cracklings and oil or grease.

Kranjska klobasa
Kranjska klobasa is a Slovenian sausage. It contains pork, bacon, water, sea salt, a little garlic and pepper.

Prekmurska gibanica
Prekmurska gibanica is a type of gibanica or layered cake. It contains poppy seeds, walnuts, apples, raisins and ricotta fillings. Although native to Prekmurje, it has achieved the status of a national specialty of Slovenia. The unique sweetmeat shows the variety of agriculture in this region. The name gibanica comes from dialectical expression güba and in this case refers to a fold.

Cviček
Cviček is a typical Slovenian wine. It’s a combination of red and white grapes. It has a low alcohol percentage. It has been said that wine growing on volcanic soil has healing abilities. The quality of wine was dropping in the Middle Ages and the wine got more sour. People called the wine Cviček what is an old Slovenian word for very sour wine.

Radenska
Radenska is a world-wide known brand if mineral water and it’s one of the oldest Slovenian brands. In 1869, Charles Henn started filling bottles with mineral water on his land in Radenci. In 1923 the mineral water has been recognized as water with a healing effect. The name Radenska Three Heart has been used since 1936.
